Week in Review

The famine in Niger is heartbreaking, and the number of people at risk could reach 3.9mm in the next month.  To find out how you can help click here.

You will hear more about our partnership with Partners in Health in the coming weeks, but after reading this article we are thrilled that we will be able to ensure that 1,500 children are in school in Malawi and not working on tabacco farms.

Today brings Women's History Month to a close, in honor of women everywhere check out how technology was able to bring moms across the globe together.  Is this the start of a new generation of penpals?  Imagine how wonderful it would be if women around the world could learn from eachother?  Healthier women, healthier babies, stronger young women and a booming new generation!

Our hearts go out to this family.  After adopting two children from Haiti they have been inspired to begin a mission in Haiti and be directors for Chances for Children’s long-term Children’s Center

After a fabulous trip to Drybar over the weekend I was reminded to order more hair ties from Emi- Jay.  These amazing 16 year old girls developed a great product AND they give a portion of their proceeds to multiple charities!  Hopefully one day we can join the list of charities they support.  Keep up the good work girls!
Have a great weekend everyone!

Price Check

Last week we bought milkshakes for our group in honor of our Milkshake feature.  They were delicious, but gone only moments after we got them.  Did you know that the cost of all these milkshakes could change the lives of two children if you provided each of them with a uniform?

That's right! You can provide two children with uniforms and change their lives with only $30!

Week in Review

Today is the beginning of a new chapter for our blog!  Threads is designed to show you all the little snippets of our organization.  This includes topics and people we find inspiring, gifts that give back that we are currently loving and updates on our partners and projects.  At the end of each week we will post five of our favorite things!

Who doesn't need a little inspiration on a Friday afternoon?

In honor of World Water Week this article reminds us how a little can go a long way to provide water.  The image above is courtesy of one of our favorite nonprofits, charity: water.  When we were starting Tailored for Education we looked at their organization as a role model.

A man after our own hearts.  We couldn't agree with him more!

In case you missed it yesterday, we are still over the moon about our Milkshake feature.

These summer-like temps in Boston are getting us ready for spring and summer clothes.  Especially this AFIA dress, sustainable and made in Ghana!  Perfection!

Amazing "Dear Dad" letter!  More initiatives like this will save the lives of many expecting mothers and their babies.
Happy weekend to you all!

Milkshake brings....

....lots of excitement (sorry, no boys to the yard)!  Reading Milkshake's daily email is the unofficial start to my day.  With a slogan of "all that's good" how could it not?  Between all the financial news we read each day to get us up to speed for our day job, Milkshake provides the perfect balance. Their daily email featuring amazing causes, products that give back, enlightening books, and people that make this world a better place has been the source of great inspiration.  When we emailed the Milkshake team and they agreed Tailored for Education was a great fit for their daily email as well as their Huffington Post blog well, we were BEYOND excited.

Fast forward to this morning when the headline from Milkshake read "Give a Uniform, Change a Life."  Jess and I were instantly texting fast and furiously about our excitement!  Once at our desks (with perma smiles) we officially named today Milkshake Day at Tailored for Education.  If you were in our group at work you would be getting a milkshake as your afternoon treat today!

So without further adieu.....

Give A Uniform, Change A Life

Mar 21 2012 CausesChildren

You don't tend to think of a school uniform as a terribly important part of the educational process, but for some children, it can mean the difference between learning to read and staying at home. While uniforms aren't particularly common in America, there are countries where the cost of a uniform can prohibit children from attending school. In places like Tanzania and Haiti, there have been reports of children being beaten for coming in without the proper attire. Others, too poor to purchase the mandatory outfit, simply do not go to school at all.

Friends and co-workers Megan Kelly and Jessica Roy got wind of the issue from a mutual friend, and instead of simply lamenting the problem, they decided to do something about it. The Boston-based ladies started a nonprofit, Tailored for Education, which provides uniforms for children in need.

We had a chance to talk to the inspiring women. Learn more about their project, below.

Can you guys tell us a bit more about why uniforms are so essential? Can the kids go to school without uniforms?
Megan: We hear different stories. In some cases, the teacher will let it slide if the colors are similar. But we've also heard stories from Ghana where the children who don't wear uniforms are whipped every day—but they still go to school, which I think is so amazing. It's definitely one of the barriers that keep kids from going to school. From everything we've learned, school uniforms have deep cultural roots. They also put all the kids on the same playing field; some of these kids don't have clothes to wear around, and it makes it so no one has to know that they're the poor kid in the class.

What has been the most exciting part so far about working with Tailored for Education?
Jess: It has been a really eye-opening learning experience, thanks to all the people we've talked to and all the work we've done along the way. I, for one, didn't know that all of these amazing organizations existed. I had no idea how many people devoted their lives to philanthropic living. You just don't realize how many people are able to drop everything, pick up their lives, and devote all their time to helping other people. I also found that everybody in the nonprofit world is just so kind. Everyone is so open and friendly and willing to help -- and that's very different from certain aspects of the business world.

Megan: It is always so exciting to get $15 donations from strangers. It was one thing when my parents did it, or my grandparents donated. I was so grateful but I knew they were doing it because of me. When we started getting donations from strangers, we were thrilled. A $20 donation from a stranger really does help, because the average cost of a uniform is $16 to $20. So when you see a donation like that, you know there is a total stranger out there who believes in what you are doing, and who really wants to help.

What would your advice be to someone who wanted to start a charitable project?
Megan: I think the other thing is to think about what aid means. Not only are we giving these children uniforms, but we're also having them made locally, which provides jobs for members of the community. We've been learning a lot about microfinance, and we've realized how important it is to help provide jobs and help the economy. The idea is not to constantly give to these developing nations -- it's to find a way to help them become sustainable.

Thanks so much to Amy, Katy and the rest of the team at Milkshake for believing in our cause as much as we do!

P.S. As if this day couldn't get any better....Reese expecting #3!

International Women's Day

International Women's Day gives us a chance to think about what the future looks like for girls all over the world.  Unfortunately, in many cases it is not as bright as one would hope.  The good news is that we aren't the only ones trying to help girls in developing countries get to school and stay there.  The Girl Effect videos have been inspiring us for months now and today seems like the perfect time to share them with all of you.  Please take a moment and watch the below video to see how investing in girls can make a huge impact!

Donating a uniform today could change the life of a young girl forever.
